I’ve been out to California exactly once at the time of this writing and that was a single day in 2016 in Death Valley. In the opporessive midday heat the salt flats shimmered and sizzled from a hundred feet away. The only signs of life were the buzzing tourist, cirlcing buzzards, and swaying flowers.
